West Omaha Baptist Church held its first service in Omaha, Nebraska on Sunday, September 24, 2006. Fourteen adults attended the inaugural morning service, including two visitors from the area. With the assistance of a couple of sister churches, over 2,300 tracts were distributed in the area around the church in preparation for “Opening Day.” Four folks trusted Christ as their Saviour in the week before the first service. The church is currently meeting in a shopping plaza storefront which has additional rooms for the junior church and nursery.
The church-planting missionary is Pastor Doug Robertson, serving together with his wife, Jaime, and their two children, Kent and Arielle. (Mrs. Robertson is the daughter of Pastor Jim Chamberlain, Southtown Baptist Church, Des Moines, Iowa.) Bro. Robertson is one of many men across the country that has been sent out by Crossroads Baptist Church (Dr. Lou Baldwin), in Baileys Crossroads, Virginia.
While the Robertson’s home in Virginia took longer to sell than anticipated, they remained faithful to the work, commuting from Des Moines, Iowa to Omaha on Thursdays and Sundays for services. When the home in Virginia sold, they moved to Omaha the first week of January. This allowed them to make many visits in the ensuing weeks, resulting in three more converts and many repeat visitors. Two have joined the new ministry, one by baptism, and about 10 people attend at least one of the three services each week.
